On this occasion we will talk about this new consumable that has been a surprise for many, although DNP had been talking to me about this project for more than a year, and now it has become a reality. Undoubtedly, DNP continues its commitment to innovation in the photography sector and on this occasion presents a new metallic consumable in the world of photographic printing with thermal sublimation technology.
This new DNP consumable provides prints with metallic colors, intense and striking, with a brightness that gives a special touch to the printed images.
I could not avoid the temptation to personally test this consumable to be able to see and explain its possibilities from my point of view.
The printed copies are really eye-catching and attract considerable attention. The metallic effect is especially intense in medium-low densities of all colors and I especially like grays (black and white) as well as greens, ochers, pinks, blues… in photos of nature, architecture, greeting type compositions with people, and as I said, the effect is more intense and visible when the images are not dominated by dark tones.
I think it is an ideal consumable for those jobs in which you or the final customer wants to distinguish himself by delivering or giving away images printed on a different support and is willing to assume that extra cost, such as commercial or social events, tourist photos, magnets, calendars, advertising composition, reminder, etc.
As for comparisons with respect to the DNP consumables you are already using, it is important to understand that this “special” paper does not replace the existing one, i.e. it is not a question of choosing one or the other, but to see if this new type of DNP consumable can fit into your offer to the customer. Regarding the grammage, it is good, a good grammage, the same as the usual consumables. Note also that the paper is not white, but “metallic” gray to give the results described above, but this will also affect the densities and tones, giving us a result of more saturated colors and, as is obvious, the photos with a white border or white background will now be “metallic” in color.
As a conclusion, I think you should disregard it, if what you are looking for in it is for example the smoothness and accuracy in the transitions of soft skin tones as the usual consumable does, but if you are looking for something different and as a whole with impact, it is a paper that can adapt very well to those special jobs in which we will be looking at the metallic tones to the brightness of the light.
Regarding more technical issues, it is advisable to use a specific color profile provided by DNP to use the DNP Luxury Media Metallic consumable, and also that we must be very careful if we use it sporadically, loading and unloading the reel every few copies, since the amount of paper left over is minimal and we can run out of paper before the ribbon is completely used up. Regarding these two topics, in the Post of “Use and handling of DNP metallic paper“I explain how to load the DNP DS620 printer without paper cuts to avoid running out of paper prematurely, and also how to apply color profiles in Windows printing and in the DNP SL 620 kiosk.
Finally, the consumable box includes a roll of metallic paper and a ribbon for a total of 200 15×20 photos (or 400 10×15 photos).
